Abstract

The era of the COVID pandemic is largely over, but the disposal of discarded face masks has become a major challenge. To tackle this challenge, this paper reports the application of recycled polypropylene fibers from discarded masks as a reinforcement for concrete, hence providing a solution for the disposal challenge and ensuring the safety of the environment. Infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to investigate the properties of the recycled polypropylene fibers. Then the effects of these fibres on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete were tested. The results showed that the addition of recycled polypropylene fibers resulted in increased strength and durability of concrete, as well as 7% increase in tensile strength.
