How to Clip Coupons, Find Them Online and in Stores

04 Apr.,2024

Coupons have come a long way since the days when clipping them from newspapers was the only option. Today there are several ways to save money on groceries whether you're tech savvy or prefer a scissor. That’s particularly important now with inflation running at a 40-year high and food prices up 11.9 percent year-over-year. With millions of older adults struggling to put food on the table, coupons have become invaluable and finding them is easier than you think. Here’s how.

1. Newspaper coupons

Newspaper coupons come as an insert in newspapers published weekly and on Sunday. The Sunday newspaper tends to have the most coupons, comprised of both manufacturer and national store coupons. The week day papers usually have deals from local supermarkets.

How to score them: Newspaper coupons can be found in national and local newspapers and sometimes in newsletters and shoppers distributed for free within the community.

2. Catalina coupons

Catalina coupons are typically colorful, long, narrow coupons that can be used to get money off a specific product or your next purchase.  They can be store specific or issued by the manufacturer.

How to score them: Catalina coupons print out in store from a separate machine once you complete your purchase. These are not the ones that print out at the end of your receipt.

3. Manufacturer coupons

Issued by the manufacturer, they give you money off a specific product. There are typically limits on how many manufacturer coupons you can use on an item. Usually, it's one manufacturer coupon per product.

How to score them: There’s several ways to find manufacturer coupons including newspapers, newsletters, websites that aggregate different manufacturer coupons, through the brand’s website, and at the grocery store.

4. Grocery store coupons

These are issued by the grocery store, giving customers a percentage discount on the entire bill or money off specific items.

How to score them: Grocery store coupons can be either clipped from newspapers, newsletters or in weekly ads and found inside the stores. They can also be printed from the store’s website or downloaded from the grocery store’s app.

I went on a mission to find every single place to get coupons and came up with this ultimate list.

I pored over sales ads, emails, store receipts, lists of discount coupon companies, and even bathroom stalls (don’t worry, I washed my hands) to bring you every possible place you can find coupons. From the obvious to the obscure, my list covers them all.

So if you’re ready to dive in, let’s get to it, starting with grocery savings, as they tend to be the fave!

Before you start searching for coupons, don’t forget to download the KCL app for coupons, sales, and deals. Then text HACKS to 57299 for more money-saving tips.

Where To Find Grocery Coupons

Never pay full price for your groceries again. With a collection of coupons and a bit of planning, you can enjoy savings every time you’re at the register.

Get Sunday newspaper coupons for free or through a subscription

You can find free newspaper coupons left behind in your local coffee shop, libraries, post office, or waiting rooms! Or, wait until Monday and ask local businesses if they have any leftover newspapers they can give you.

Check Discounted Newspapers for potentially cheap newspaper subscriptions — simply enter your ZIP code and see what you can save.

Find free coupons in stores.

When you’re shopping in a store, there are a few different ways you can get free coupons. The very first thing you should do is get the in-store sales flyer. Not only will that show you the current sale, but it also sometimes contains exclusive coupons that pair with the sale ad.

Grab free manufacturer coupons directly on products.

While you’re shopping at the store, look out for these free manufacturer coupons:

  • Peelies (adhesive coupons)
  • Hangtag coupons
  • Tear-pad coupons
  • Blinkies (coupons that pop out of a little dispenser with a blinking light)
  • Inside the package

Cereal boxes are notorious for having peelies slapped right on the box. And remember, just because you found these coupons doesn’t mean you have to use them right away.

Score printable coupons on the web.

There are multiple dedicated coupon sites out there. Thankfully, we do the hard work for you. KCL has the web’s most comprehensive database for free printable coupons.

Here’s how to print exactly what you’re looking for:

  • Search for the item or brand (“detergent,” “Tide,” etc.).
  • Click on the “Printable” section.
  • Choose a coupon and you’ll be taken to the website to print. Depending on the site, you may need to sign up to access the coupon.

Sign up for a store reward or loyalty card.

Sign up for the newsletter and text alerts from your favorite grocery store. Not only can store loyalty programs get you digital coupons, but you can also save at the pump and earn cash back. With stores like Kroger, you can rack up cash-back deals using your loyalty grocery card.

Use coupon apps to get digital coupons.

Stores like Kroger, Target, Publix, and Winn-Dixie have digital coupons you clip right to your account. Plus, other coupon sources like Coupons.com offer digital coupons that are linked to your reward or loyalty card.

Keep the savings going with cash-back apps like Ibotta.

The savings don’t stop with just coupons. Before you head to the store, be sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Rebate Apps. You’ll learn exactly how to save even more money with rebate apps.

Start with these rebate or cash-back apps:

Where To Find Drugstore Coupons

Whether you shop at a national chain like CVS or Walgreens or a local pharmacy, you can find coupons to save you some bucks. Use the tips from the grocery tips above, plus these extras exclusive to drugstores.

Need a refresher? Check our couponing guides for these stores:

Clip digital coupons on your local pharmacy website(s).

Like grocery stores, drugstores offer digital coupons you can clip to your loyalty card, too. Stores like Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid offer personalized coupons as well. The more you shop there, the more the store learns what products you like.

Look for free coupons printed at the register.

Not all drugstores have Catalina machines, but some do have coupons that print at the register in addition to your receipt or on the bottom/back of your receipt. You don’t have to be a part of a loyalty program to get these register rewards.

Use apps to get prescription discount coupons.

Save on your prescriptions with a coupon app. There are a few discount coupon companies to choose from:

Ask your doctor for a coupon or a sample (which nearly always will have coupons inside).

The next time you visit your doctor, don’t be afraid to ask if they have any free samples. Not only does this give you the chance to try a product for free, but it nearly always gives you the chance to find a prescription discount coupon inside for the full-size product.

Even more ways to get coupons for grocery and drugstores:

Request manufacturer grocery coupons through a brand’s contact form.

Did you know you can write to brands and they’ll mail you coupons? We wrote to over 90 companies and got back a good amount of free coupons.

To see exactly what manufacturers sent, check out the list of high-value coupons. A few included brands were:

I have often received high-value coupons with these samples, and the best part is they’re mailed directly to you for free! And, you get a free sample product to try.

Don’t throw out junk mail.

Check your mailbox for direct mailers from your local grocery store. Look for grocery coupons in magazines, too.

Sign up for a grocery delivery service for first-timer coupons and promo codes.

Grocery delivery services like Instacart and Shipt will often offer coupons and promo codes to new customers. They’ll sometimes send coupons when you haven’t ordered in a while, too. You can also snag some awesome savings with Walmart+ Delivery like a whopping $25 off a $75 order.
